Bartram House Bakery has three locations, McMurray, Wexford and South Side. The South Side location, 2612 E. Carson Street, is the newest, and opened in early September, 2014. Although they have some of the best baked goods in the city, it has so much more to offer than a typical bakery. It’s more of an eatery. I have visited the South Side location several times, and I try to get a different baked good every time I go. I've had the red velvet cupcakes, vanilla donuts, carrot cake, bourbon pecan bar, Russian tea cookies, the list goes on and on, lol. I don’t know if I have picked a favorite yet, because they are all so good!
In addition to their delectable baked goods, they serve breakfast (all day). My favorite breakfast item is their French Toast (pictured on homepage). It’s not the ordinary store bought bread, you may be used to eating from your childhood French toast; this is made with sweet, soft brioche bread..yes, you read correctly..BRIOCHE! After they bake the brioche fresh, they dip it in an egg custard that is seasoned with nutmeg. Once cooked, it’s topped with fresh strawberries and served with cinnamon sugar butter and warm syrup. The French toast almost melts in your mouth; and that butter was so good, I asked for a small to go container of it :)
My favorite lunchtime meal is their Smoked Gouda Shrimp & Grits (pictured on homepage). The grits are flavorful and cheesy. The shrimp is juicy and a little spicy because of the Cajun seasoning. It’s all served on a bed of spinach and tomato and topped with crumbled bacon. The spinach and tomato help to cool the spiciness of the shrimp, which I like. If you like the spice, then just don’t eat as much of the greens. Each fork full will leave you wanting more. It really is a Breelicous Bite. Check out the pictures below for a closer look at some of their delightful bakery items. Oh, and after 7:00 pm all the breakfast pastries are half off!!! Make sure to stop by and treat your sweet tooth. *thumbs up*
