Meat and Potatoes in Downtown, Pittsburgh

I called two weeks in advance just to get reservations for one of the “hottest” restaurants in Pittsburgh, Meat & Potatoes. I was dying to taste this brunch that all the foodies were raving about. I was only able to get a seating for 2 at 10:30 am, which is when they open for Sunday brunch. My mother and I were seated in the main dining room and the ambiance was cool. They had a DJ playing smooth groovy music. I was just excited to be there. The waitress came over and brought us a fancy water jug while we scanned the menu. Of course I had viewed the menu before we got there, but still hadn’t decided what to get. She came back over and read the specials. There was one that caught my attention, it was the Chocolate Chip Pancakes with a Peanut Butter Sauce and topped with Brownie Ice Cream..I knew I had to try that. My mom ordered the Chicken and Waffles. I was glad she did, because I wanted to try that too. I also ordered a side of Sausage and The Brunch Punch.

As we waited on our meals, the restaurant got increasingly more packed every minute. It was a laid back atmosphere though..I guess having the DJ there, helped. Our food came out and I was happy with the appearance of my dish. My mom’s on the other had looked like a whole chicken just died on her plate. It was 4 HUGE pieces, they were so big, that you couldn’t even see the waffle under it. I never say that anything is too much, but that was too much!! As I started eating my pancakes, I realized it was a little dry, so I asked our waitress to bring me syrup. It took her a while to bring it out, I wasn’t sure if they had a maple tree back there, and they were getting fresh sap to make it..but it took forever. While waiting I decided to get up and check out the Bloody Mary Bar. This bar had everything! Shrimp, Bacon, Prosciutto, Chick Peas, Peppers..etc. I was impressed, although I don’t drink them. I returned to my table and finally got my syrup. It made the pancakes better. I really liked the sausage, it was fresh, well-seasoned and perfectly browned. I asked my mom to try her dish and she obliged. The chicken was fried super hard and didn’t have much flavor. The waffle was good. It was cheddar and jalapeno and served with a bacon bourbon syrup. I started to get full after eating a pancake and a half..but decided to take one more bite. As I began to chew on my last piece, I felt something hard and inedible in my mouth. I took it out and separated it from the pancake, and in my hand was a small hard object. I wasn’t sure what it was. I motioned for the waitress and showed it to her. She took it to her manager. The manager came over and apologetically expressed her concern and stated it was a Peanut Shell!! I guess, just like the syrup, they make fresh peanut butter, lol. She explained that they would take the pancakes off my bill.

As you can probably tell, I wasn’t happy with my experience. The best thing was the Brownie Ice Cream on my Pancakes. The atmosphere is cool but the food didn’t live up to the hype. I wasn’t impressed.
